How image compression works

Re-encoding an image as JPEG with a lower quality setting trades a small amount of visual fidelity for dramatically smaller files. UnBG runs the encoder right in your browser using the canvas API, so nothing gets uploaded and you see savings immediately.

Tips

  • Quality 0.7–0.8 is invisible to most eyes and saves 60–80%.
  • For photos, prefer JPEG. For UI screenshots with text, prefer PNG or WebP.
  • Resize first if the image is larger than it needs to be — biggest savings come from fewer pixels, not lower quality.
